London Heathrow Airport is the largest airport and one of the busiest in Europe. It is located about 24 km from Central London and covers an area of 12.14 sq. km. There are two main runways running east and west and five terminals. It was a military airfield during the Second World War and was transferred to the Ministry of Civil Aviation in 1946. Over 90 airlines flying to more than 170 destinations operate out of Heathrow and the facilities are designed to accommodate millions of passengers. Terminal 5 was opened in March 2008.
London Biggin Hill Airport is located on Biggin Hill on the southern edge of the city. This airport specializes in general aviation handling executive jets and private airline service as well as offering instruction in flying. There are no commercial airlines operating from this airport. There are two runways, a terminal for passengers with a licensed bar and customs and immigration facilities.
London City Airport is located opposite the London Regatta Centre and is a single runway airport. It is intended for use by airlines for short take off and landing with airlines, such as Air France, British Airways, SAS and Lufthansa operating from this airport. It specializes in handling business and leisure travellers and is the closest private jet centre to London.
London Gatwick is the second largest and busiest airport in the United Kingdom. It is located in Crawley, West Sussex, about 46 km south of London. Airlines fly to over 200 destinations and millions of passengers pass through this airport every year. It is the main base of operations for British Airways, Easy Jet and Virgin Atlantic. There are two terminals, each with a wide range of services for passengers. All areas are fully accessible to disabled passengers and there is an area for children to play while waiting for flights.
London Luton Airport is an international airport located in Luton, about 48 km north of London. It has a single runway and has a regular passenger terminal as well as a private terminal, called the Silverjet Terminal.
London Stansted Airport is located in the Uttlesford District of Essex County, about 48 km from London. It is the hub for many European low cost carriers with one passenger terminal, one cargo terminal and a terminal for private aircraft. The passenger terminal contains several restaurants, shops and bars. However, there is no space available for guests to watch passengers depart.
